The story of the early Christian Church is documented by
Luke in the Acts of the Apostles. But how did he select his
material? Is it realistic? Is it relevant?
Many argue that the things the modern mind finds
unacceptable in the Christian Gospel (the miracles and a belief in the
resurrection in particular) are not an essential part of that Gospel: they
belonged only to the chrysalis stage of Christianity. This is not a modern
claim: the Sadducees believed neither in the survival of the human spirit
after death, nor in the possibility of bodily resurrection.
Yet the early Christians found these beliefs essential to
their faith. In a pluralistic, secular society shot through with
superstition, they found it crucial to assert that Jesus was risen from the dead
and was the Messiah. They could not dimply concentrate on his moral
teaching and his insights into the fatherhood of God.
In a vivid and original book, David Gooding brings to life
the world of the early Church and leaves the reader with the clear vision of
what it really means to be true to the faith.
